National Learning Pathway
The foundation of the educational system in Bangladesh was laid during the period of British rule. The system has three levels: primary, secondary, and higher education. Primary and secondary education are compulsory, while access and quality continue to improve across the country.
Primary education consists of eight years, and secondary education lasts four years. Public examinations mark key stages of schooling and help students progress toward higher secondary, college, and university education.
Streams of Study
Primary education is provided through general and madrasah streams. Secondary education includes general, technical-vocational, and madrasah routes.
Higher education includes general studies in science, arts, business, and social science, along with madrasah and technology education. Technology education covers fields such as agriculture, engineering, medicine, textile, leather technology, and ICT.
College and University Education
Higher education continues through college and university programs, including three-year pass degrees and four-year honours graduate courses. Master's programs are generally one year for honours graduates and two years for pass degree holders.
Students can choose from 173 approved public and private universities, along with 148 public and private Medical & Dental Colleges across Bangladesh.
Technical higher education starts after higher secondary level, with engineering, agriculture, business, medical, and information and communication technology among the major study areas.
Career and Vocational Routes
Bangladesh relies on engineering colleges, polytechnic institutes, law colleges, and specialized colleges for practical training. These institutions prepare students for professional fields including arts, home economics, social welfare, research, and agriculture.
